The Society for Human Resource Management published its State of AI in HR 2026 report in May 2026, drawing on a survey of more than 1,700 HR professionals conducted in December 2025. The research found that while a large majority of chief human resource officers expect deeper AI adoption, more than half of organizations have not yet used AI in HR and have no plans to do so this year.
Where AI is in use, the report found it concentrated in recruiting, HR technology, learning and development, and employee experience. It also flagged an awareness gap, with many HR leaders citing limited understanding of what the technology can do as the main barrier to adoption.
